Reflexology has an illustrious history and may be traced as far back as ancient Egypt where pictograms depicting the practice of reflexology have been found in the tomb of the Egyptian physician Ankmahor (circa 2,500 BC).
Indian pictures and Sanskrit symbols, along with an ancient Chinese text entitled 'Examining Foot Method', both from approximately 5,000 years ago provide further evidence to support the theory that foot massage was widely practiced in the ancient world.
It is reputed that the Incas passed the knowledge of foot massage to the Cherokee Indians of Native America; today they still place great importance on working the feet to maintain physical, mental and spiritual balance.
Ancient Chinese philosophy states that energy flow around the body can become blocked, long term this may result in illness and disease. One theory is that reflexology works by unblocking the trapped energy; this stimulates the body's healing process, allowing individuals to achieve physical, emotional and spiritual harmony.
Reflexology is a natural form of healing based upon the principle that our entire body, organs and glands etc are represented by reflex points on the hands and feet. Applying pressure to these reflex points can either bring about a relaxing or stimulating response in the corresponding part of the body encouraging it to function more efficiently.
Treatments can either relax or stimulate as meets the client's needs.
